Anyone engaging in outdoor
activities in most regions
will have to consider the
possibility of rain showers
arriving while they are out in
the open. This is especially
true if you are planning an
overnight or multi-day trip in
the outdoors, such as a river
journey in a canoe. While
tents are the standard
protection against rain and
other bad weather while in
camp at the end of each day,
you will also have to consider
some sort of foul weather gear
that will keep you dry while
you are traveling and while
you are making and breaking
camp or otherwise busy with
activities outside the tent.
If you’re ever canoeing during
a thunderstorm, the poncho
does not restrict paddling and
you can continue paddling in
hot weather while wearing it
without breaking out in a
lather of sweat. A poncho is
an outer garment designed to
keep the body warm or, if made
from a watertight material, to
keep dry during rain. The
poncho is essentially a single
large sheet of fabric with an
opening in the center for the
head with a piece of fabric
that covers the head.
Rainproof ponchos normally are
fitted with fasteners to close
the sides once the poncho is
draped over the body, with
openings provided for the
arms, and many other tactical
ponchos have hoods attached to
ward off wind and rain.
